To post bail in Savannah, you will be working with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center at 1050 Carl Griffin Drive. Once a judge sets bond, your loved one can be released in one of a few ways: through a bail bonding company, with a cash bond, with a property bond, or with an out-of-county bond. Most families use a bondsman, because it means paying a fee instead of the full bond amount.
None of this is complicated. It just moves faster when you know the steps before you need them.
Where Is the Jail in Savannah?
People arrested in Savannah and across Chatham County are generally booked into the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center at 1050 Carl Griffin Drive, Savannah, GA 31405.
The Sheriff’s Office posts booking lists covering the past 24 and 72 hours on its bonding procedures page. That is a good first stop if you are trying to confirm someone was booked. Not sure which jail your loved one is in? Our inmate locator walks through the search.
How Is Bond Set in Chatham County?
A judge sets bond. You cannot post bail until that happens, and for most families this is the longest part of the wait.
For some charges, bond can be set fairly quickly. For others, it is set at a first appearance hearing. Certain serious felonies require a superior court judge to decide bond, which can take longer. Our conversation with defense attorney Lawrence Zimmerman explains how judges set bond in Georgia in more detail.
What Are Your Options to Post Bail in Savannah?
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office lists four ways to post bond.
A bail bonding company
You pay the bondsman a fee, called a premium, and the bonding company guarantees the full bond to the court. The premium is regulated under Georgia law, and your agent will explain the exact amount for your case. The bond is then presented at the cashier’s office at the Detention Center. The Sheriff’s Office only accepts bonds from bonding companies it has approved.
A cash bond
You pay the full bond amount at the Detention Center with a valid government-issued photo ID. Cash bonds can be returned after the case is resolved, through a separate process with the Sheriff’s Office.
A property bond
Chatham County has its own rules here. The property must be in Chatham County and free of liens, an attorney has to complete a title search, and you will need proof that the property taxes are paid. A lien is placed on the property. If the defendant misses court, the property is at risk.
An out-of-county bond
A bond can sometimes be posted in another county, with approval from that county’s sheriff. Call the Sheriff’s Office before you count on this route.
How Much Does It Cost to Post Bail in Chatham County?
It depends on the bond amount and the option you choose.
Every bond at the Detention Center carries a $20 non-refundable bonding fee, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The Detention Center accepts cash, Visa, MasterCard, money orders, and cashier’s checks. It does not take payments by phone.
If you use a bondsman, you pay the premium instead of the full bond. Payment plans can make that more manageable, and some bonds require collateral. At A 2nd Chance Bail Bonds, collateral is limited to cash or a real estate lien. Our guide to bail collateral explains when it comes up.
What Should You Bring?
- A valid government-issued photo ID
- Your loved one’s full legal name and date of birth
- The charges and booking number, if you have them
- An accepted form of payment
- Property documents, if you are using a property bond
Our family checklist for posting bail covers the rest.
How Long Does Release Take?
There is no set number. Once bond is posted, the jail still has to process the release, and that can take a while depending on how busy the facility is.
Timing also depends on the day. The Sheriff’s bonding office lists weekday business hours, so check the page for current hours before a weekend or holiday. We explain the general timeline in how long it takes to be released on bond.
